PDP Dismisses FHC Ibadan Ruling, Says No Cause for Alarm as Appeal Begins

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says there is no cause for alarm following the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which declines to grant an order of mandamus sought in an ongoing internal leadership dispute.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and monitored by Mediaplusng.com, the PDP says the court’s decision is based on its view that granting the relief would amount to sitting on appeal over judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

The party says it has already briefed its legal team to immediately file an appeal against the ruling and pursue all necessary legal steps to firmly protect its position and advance its arguments before the appellate courts.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the PDP insists that the Kabiru Turaki–led leadership that emerged from the Ibadan Convention remains legally valid, intact, and unshaken, pending the final and authoritative pronouncement of higher courts on the matter.

The party maintains that the judgment does not invalidate its position or structures, stressing that the legal process is far from concluded. It says the appeal will provide an opportunity for the issues raised to be fully examined and clarified by the appropriate judicial authorities.

PDP leadership also assures members and supporters across the country that the ruling does not signal any setback to the party’s ongoing reorganisation and renewal efforts. It describes the development as part of a normal legal process in a democratic system governed by the rule of law.

The statement urges party faithful to remain calm, focused, and committed to the party’s ideals, warning against misinformation and unnecessary panic that could distract from the PDP’s broader political objectives.

The party further reiterates its commitment to internal democracy, constitutional order, and lawful resolution of disputes, adding that it will continue to respect court processes while pursuing justice through legal means.

According to the PDP, the ongoing “REBIRTH” movement within the party remains firmly on course, with leaders and members united in their resolve to strengthen the party ahead of future political engagements.

The party leadership also calls on its members to continue mobilising at all levels, saying the current legal challenge will not derail its plans to reposition itself as a strong and credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.

The PDP concludes by reaffirming confidence in the judiciary and the appellate process, expressing optimism that the issues surrounding the Ibadan Convention will ultimately be resolved in line with the law and the party’s constitution.
