PDP Urges Nigerians to Resist APC’s Alleged One-Party Agenda

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on June 12, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on citizens to stand against what it describes as a calculated attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose a one-party state.

In a statement, the PDP urged Nigerians, civil society organizations, democratic institutions, international partners, and advocates of democratic governance to remain vigilant and speak out against rising anti-democratic practices. The party highlighted issues such as the erosion of the rule of law, the shrinking political space for opposition, and the growing concern over the independence of key democratic institutions.

The PDP criticized the APC-led administration for what it termed as the misuse of state power to undermine democracy. It accused the government of manipulating the electoral process, restricting media freedom, suppressing opposition voices, and using economic hardship as a tool of control.

The party expressed particular concern over recent political developments in Edo and Rivers states, alleging constitutional violations that threaten democratic governance. According to the PDP, the removal of elected leaders and the imposition of sole administrators signal a troubling trend toward authoritarianism.

Recalling the legacy of Chief MKO Abiola, whose struggle is commemorated on June 12, the PDP emphasized that Democracy Day symbolizes Nigerians’ fight for justice, accountability, credible elections, and good governance. The party stated that these values thrived under previous PDP administrations and must be protected from further erosion.

The PDP urged the APC government to honor the memory of Abiola by respecting the principles of separation of powers and ensuring the independence of democratic institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Assembly, and the judiciary.

Additionally, the PDP called for an end to policies that worsen poverty and diminish public trust in governance. It asked the APC to embrace transparency, protect press freedom, and ensure fair electoral processes going forward.

As the nation looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, the PDP encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, law-abiding, and united in the fight to preserve democratic values. The party reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming the mandate to serve Nigerians and restore inclusive, people-driven leadership.
