The Benue State Police Command has restored peace following a violent protest that broke out on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi. The demonstration, initially organized to express concerns over recent security challenges in the state, turned chaotic after being hijacked by violent elements.
According to police sources, officers received early intelligence and quickly deployed tactical teams to monitor the protest and maintain order. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, Ph.D., alongside the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. John Ode, arrived at the protest location to engage with the demonstrators and appeal for calm.
However, the protesters refused to listen, and the situation escalated as some individuals attempted to attack the Deputy Governor. Security forces acted swiftly, using non-lethal crowd control methods, including smoke and water cannons, to disperse the mob and safely evacuate the Deputy Governor. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported.
Later the same day, a separate group of hoodlums believed to be linked to the protest blocked a road in Apir, near Makurdi. They reportedly intercepted a truck and set it on fire, trapping the driver inside. The identity of the driver is yet to be confirmed.
The police have arrested 14 suspects connected to the violent incidents and promised that all those responsible will face prosecution. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved in the attack and arson.
The Benue State Police Command emphasized its support for lawful protests but condemned any form of violence, destruction, and criminal behavior. The Command praised peaceful protesters for their maturity and reassured the public of continued efforts to secure lives and property across the state.
