The Niger State Police Command confirms the discovery of a suspected missile in Zugurma area of Mashegu Local Government Area. The object is sighted in a bush by local residents at about 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, raising security concerns within the community.

Police sources say a report from residents prompts the immediate deployment of officers attached to the Ibbi Division to the scene, Mediaplusng.com reports. The operatives cordon off the area and secure the object to prevent access by civilians, while safety measures are put in place to protect lives and property.

Following the initial response, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit of the command arrives at the scene. The specialist unit conducts a detailed assessment, investigation, and recovery of the suspected missile in line with standard security procedures.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Command, SP Wasiu Abiodu, says the item is safely secured and taken in for professional examination, Mediaplusng.com reports. He assures residents that the situation is under control and that there is no immediate threat to the community.

According to the police, investigations are ongoing to determine the origin, nature, and purpose of the object. Security agencies are also working to establish whether the suspected missile poses any broader risk or is linked to criminal or terror-related activities within or outside the state.

The police command commends residents of Zugurma for promptly reporting the suspicious object instead of attempting to touch or move it. Authorities stress that timely information from the public remains critical to maintaining safety and preventing potential disasters.

Residents are advised to remain calm and vigilant while investigations continue. The police also urge members of the public to always report any strange or dangerous-looking objects to the nearest security agency and avoid unnecessary contact.

SP Wasiu Abiodu reassures the people of Niger State that the command is fully committed to public safety. He adds that further details will be made public as soon as investigations are concluded and credible findings are established.
