President Bola Tinubu accepts the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appoints Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the resignation follows the submission of a letter by Mr. Egbetokun, in which he cites pressing family considerations as the reason for stepping down from the nation’s top policing position.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency confirms that President Tinubu receives the resignation and expresses profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the President commends the outgoing Inspector-General for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun is serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. His tenure witnesses ongoing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, discipline, and public trust in the Force.

President Tinubu, according to Mediaplusng.com, acknowledges Egbetokun’s contributions to institutional stability and law enforcement modernisation, noting that his leadership comes at a critical time for national security management.

In response to the development and in view of prevailing security challenges, the President approves the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu in an acting capacity, pending further constitutional procedures. The decision is said to be guided by extant laws and established legal frameworks governing appointments within the Police hierarchy.

AIG Disu is described as a seasoned officer with extensive operational experience and leadership credentials across various commands. The Presidency expresses confidence that his background in policing operations and strategic coordination will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during the transition.

In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu indicates that he will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

Following deliberation by the Council, the President is expected to transmit Disu’s name to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Security analysts note that leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force comes at a time when the country faces multifaceted security concerns, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other forms of organised crime.

The Presidency reiterates its commitment to strengthening national security institutions, enhancing intelligence-driven policing, and equipping officers with the necessary tools and training to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

President Tinubu also reaffirms his administration’s resolve to maintain professionalism, accountability, and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force, describing these elements as central to sustaining public confidence in law enforcement.

As the transition unfolds, attention turns to the forthcoming meeting of the Nigeria Police Council and the Senate confirmation process, which will determine the formal elevation of AIG Tunji Disu to the position of substantive Inspector-General of Police.
