President Tinubu Accepts INEC Chairman’s Exit, Confers National Honour

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking the end of his second term in office. Professor Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 and reappointed in 2020, completes a decade of service dedicated to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to Mediaplusng.com, President Tinubu praised Professor Yakubu for his outstanding contributions to the nation’s democracy. He commended him for overseeing credible and transparent elections during his tenure, noting that his leadership helped to build public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. In recognition of his service, the President has conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Mediaplusng.com reports that President Tinubu has also directed Professor Yakubu to hand over to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee the commission’s affairs until a new chairman is appointed. In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the privilege to serve the nation and for the honour bestowed upon him.
