Nigeria is in mourning as former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London. The news was officially confirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who announced that Buhari died at approximately 4:30 PM. today following a prolonged illness.
In a show of deep respect and national unity, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s body back home for final rites.
The President has also spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, widow of the late leader, extends his heartfelt condolences to the family and the nation.
President Buhari served Nigeria with distinction, first as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His legacy includes sweeping reforms in anti-corruption, national security, and infrastructure development.
In honour of the late leader’s contributions to the nation, President Tinubu has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff until further notice.
