President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who died after serving on the throne for over 65 years.
In a heartfelt tribute released on Saturday night, President Tinubu described Oba Adetona as one of Nigeria’s most revered and accomplished traditional rulers, whose leadership left a lasting impact on Yorubaland and the nation at large.
The President noted that the monarch’s passing came with “double pain,” as it coincided with the loss of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Oba Adetona was a towering figure, a respected leader who embodied dignity, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the development of Ijebuland and Nigeria,” President Tinubu said.
Ascending the throne at the young age of 26, Oba Adetona ruled for more than six decades with unmatched dedication. His reign ushered in significant socio-economic progress in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding communities, while his voice of reason often stood out during national crises.
President Tinubu also reflected on his personal bond with the monarch, describing him as a confidant, a source of wisdom, and a symbol of honesty. “He was a man of candour whose counsel empowered and enriched all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The President commended Oba Adetona’s enduring legacy, particularly his contributions to education and public governance through the establishment of the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
“As Nigeria mourns this monumental loss, I extend my condolences to the royal family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government and people of Ogun State, and the entire Ijebu community. May Oba Adetona rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come,” President Tinubu concluded.
