Reps Summon CBN Governor Over Alleged N16trn Non-Remittance

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The House of Representatives enters a rowdy session as lawmakers debate a motion to summon the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over alleged failure to remit key government revenues. The motion accuses the CBN of withholding more than ₦5 trillion in operating surplus and ₦11 trillion in other government revenues.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the motion is raised by Bamidele Salam, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. He tells the House that the CBN governor has ignored multiple invitations to address the committee. Salam explains that the discrepancies were discovered in the 2022 financial report of the Auditor General of the Federation.

Tension rises when the Speaker suggests setting up an ad-hoc committee to handle the investigation. As Mediaplusng.com reports, several lawmakers oppose the move, arguing that the constitutionally recognised Public Accounts Committee should retain its authority instead of being sidelined. The disagreement triggers loud objections across the chamber.

The Speaker, visibly frustrated, issues warnings to some lawmakers for disorderly conduct. After repeated attempts to calm the House, he finally bows to majority pressure. The chamber resolves to summon the CBN governor to appear before the Public Accounts Committee and provide explanations for the alleged non-remittances.
