The Rivers State House of Assembly confirms that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, are ongoing, insisting that the process has not been suspended or withdrawn.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Assembly makes this clarification in a statement issued on Friday, January 9, 2026, to address growing public speculation and reports circulating on social media. Lawmakers state that the impeachment process formally begins on January 8 and follows the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Assembly explains that official notices of allegations of gross misconduct against both the governor and the deputy governor have been duly prepared and served. It adds that the House is now awaiting their responses within the timeframe stipulated by the Constitution before proceeding to the next stage of the process.

In the statement, lawmakers dismiss claims suggesting that the impeachment move has been halted, describing such reports as false, misleading, and capable of creating unnecessary tension in the state. The House maintains that no external pressure or misinformation will derail its constitutional responsibilities.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the Assembly emphasizes its role as a democratic institution empowered to hold the executive accountable. Lawmakers insist that the impeachment process is not driven by personal interest but by the need to uphold constitutional order, transparency, and the rule of law in Rivers State.

The House further reassures residents that due process will be strictly followed, noting that impeachment under the Constitution allows the affected officials the right to respond to allegations and defend themselves. It urges the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of escalating political tensions.

The statement also warns against attempts to intimidate lawmakers or undermine legislative authority, stressing that such actions pose a threat to democratic governance. The Assembly says it remains committed to protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that constitutional provisions are respected at all times.

Political observers note that the confirmation of the impeachment process marks a critical moment in Rivers State’s political landscape, as the coming days will determine whether the process advances to a full investigation or is resolved through constitutional responses.

The statement is signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, who reiterates that the Assembly will continue to communicate official updates through recognized channels to keep the public properly informed.

As political developments unfold, stakeholders across Rivers State continue to call for calm, dialogue, and adherence to the rule of law to preserve peace and stability in the state.
