Senate Orders Full Probe into Nationwide Rail Line Failures Amid Rising Derailments

The Nigerian Senate has ordered a full-scale investigation into the recurring derailments affecting rail operations across the country. Lawmakers say the move is necessary to uncover the causes behind frequent rail accidents and to evaluate the overall safety and quality of Nigeria’s railway infrastructure.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Senate has set up an ad hoc committee led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole to oversee the probe. The committee will conduct a comprehensive assessment of imported rail materials, technical standards, and the loans obtained from China for rail development. It has six weeks to complete its findings and submit a detailed report to the upper chamber.

The investigation comes after a motion of urgent national importance was moved by Senator Ede Dafinone, following the recent derailment on the Ujevwu-Itakpe train route. Lawmakers expressed concern over the growing safety risks to passengers and the possible misuse of public funds meant for infrastructure maintenance.

In its resolution, the Senate also directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to urgently fix technical faults, causing the derailments and restoring full operational efficiency across the rail network. Lawmakers emphasized the need for improved monitoring, preventive maintenance, and stricter safety measures to ensure reliable rail transport nationwide.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the Senate’s decision reflects its commitment to accountability and public safety and ensuring that Nigeria’s rail transport system meets global standards.
