The Nigerian Senate has ordered a full investigation into aviation safety concerns following the recent report by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on an Air Peace aircraft runway incident at the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari representing Oyo North, highlights the urgent need to strengthen aviation safety and improve oversight across the sector. Lawmakers say the NSIB report revealed gaps in runway maintenance, lighting systems, and decision-making processes that could compromise passenger safety.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the Senate has directed its Committee on Aviation to collaborate with key agencies, including the NSIB, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and airline operators. The committee is expected to submit a detailed report of its findings within six weeks.
In a related development, the Senate is urging the Federal Government to construct an additional runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Lawmakers argue that the single-runway system poses safety and operational challenges, especially during maintenance or emergencies, and could affect flight schedules in the nation’s capital.
The Senate also referenced the NSIB’s investigation into the June 22, 2025, Air Peace incident involving a Boeing 737-500. Although no casualties were recorded, the report pointed to lapses in infrastructure and regulatory supervision. Lawmakers expressed concern that similar incidents are becoming more frequent and called for urgent reforms to ensure safer skies for Nigerian passengers.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the Senate’s action reflects growing pressure on aviation regulators to enhance safety standards, improve airport infrastructure, and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s air transport system.
