The Senate has ordered its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate claims that President Bola Tinubu’s directive withdrawing police escorts from VIPs is being applied selectively. Lawmakers raise concerns that senators are losing their police orderlies while other influential Nigerians continue to enjoy full security protection.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the resolution follows a point of order raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central). He tells the Senate that his only police orderly has been withdrawn, even as ministers, business owners, political families and entertainers still move with full police escorts. Ningi warns that this selective enforcement threatens lawmakers’ safety and contradicts the President’s intention to strengthen policing and public security.
The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, confirms that Senate leadership has already discussed the complaints. Mediaplusng.com reports that Jibrin acknowledges gaps in the enforcement of the President’s order and says steps are being taken to address the concerns. He assures lawmakers that the matter is being treated seriously and hints at a likely response from the executive.
Jibrin says the Senate supports the President’s reforms but insists that any breach must be addressed. He directs the Police Affairs Committee to investigate why some VIPs continue to retain police escorts despite the nationwide directive. The committee is expected to submit its findings within four weeks.
