The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains calm and focused despite recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Nigeria’s security situation.
Speaking after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Idris tells Mediaplusng.com that the President is committed to building a safer and more united Nigeria for all citizens, regardless of tribe or religion.
“Mr. President is calm and fully aware of the issues at hand. He is focused on ensuring the international community understands the progress we have made and the efforts underway to secure Nigeria,” Idris says.
According to him, Tinubu’s recent appointments in the military show his determination to strengthen the nation’s security structure. “Just last week, President Tinubu reinvigorated the leadership of the Armed Forces with the appointment of new service chiefs. This demonstrates his proactive approach even before the recent comments from the United States,” the Minister explains.
He emphasizes that government agencies are working round the clock to address domestic and international concerns about security. Channels of communication, he says, are now open to ensure the world understands Nigeria’s progress and intentions to tackle challenges effectively.
On efforts to reduce tension among religious groups, Idris assures that the government continues to engage faith leaders across the country. “Discussions with religious leaders are ongoing. The President has been meeting with them and will continue to do so because they are key partners in promoting peace and unity,” he notes.
He also dismisses claims that the Nigerian government supports attacks against any particular religion, describing such narratives as false and dangerous. “Nigeria is a nation of diverse beliefs — Muslims, Christians, and others — and our Constitution guarantees freedom of worship. The idea that this administration favours one religion over another is completely untrue,” he insists.
The Minister tells Mediaplusng.com that the government is focused on addressing the activities of extremists who aim to divide the country. “These groups are pushing false narratives to destabilize Nigeria, but the President is determined to ensure unity and lasting peace,” he says.
Idris appeals to citizens to remain calm, avoid divisive rhetoric, and focus on nation-building. “This is not the time for division or politics. It’s a time for reflection, unity, and rebuilding the Nigeria of our dreams,” he concludes.
