President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency in response to rising insecurity and has directed the immediate recruitment of additional personnel into the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the President has approved the recruitment of 20,000 new police officers, bringing the total fresh intake to 50,000. He also authorised the police to use National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training depots to speed up the process.
The President says officers withdrawn from VIP escort duties will undergo fast-track retraining before deployment to high-risk areas. He also authorised the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy trained forest guards and recruit more personnel to secure forests and flush out terrorists and bandits.
Mediaplusng.com reports that President Tinubu described the situation as a “national emergency” requiring collective action. He commended security agencies for rescuing 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 worshippers kidnapped in Kwara. He assured that efforts continue to free the remaining abducted students in Niger State and other victims still in captivity.
The President also urged the National Assembly to review laws that will allow states seeking state police to establish them. He appealed to state governments to avoid siting boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security and advised religious institutions in vulnerable communities to work closely with the police for protection.
Tinubu reiterated that the Federal Government is committed to ending herders–farmers clashes through the newly created Livestock Ministry. He encouraged herder associations to embrace ranching, end open grazing, and surrender illegal weapons. He expressed sympathy for families affected by recent attacks across several northern states and honoured fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.
President Tinubu called on Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, and united, stressing that the government will ensure peace, protect citizens, and support all security agencies with the resources needed to succeed.
