President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with national honours, cash gifts, and housing allocations following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship win.
At a reception held at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, conferred the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) title on every player and technical crew member. The President also approved a cash reward of $100,000 (Naira equivalent) for each player and $50,000 for the coach and staff. Additionally, all team members will receive a housing unit.
President Tinubu lauded D’Tigress for becoming the first African team to qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament. He described their 78-64 triumph over Mali as a symbol of Nigerian resilience and national pride.
Special praise was given to Coach Rena Wakama, celebrated for her leadership and for inspiring young Nigerian girls. Tinubu also commended MVP Amy Okonkwo and top scorer Ezinne Kalu for their outstanding performances.
Highlighting the role of Nigerian women in sports, Tinubu said, “From football to athletics and now basketball, our women continue to shine on global stages. You have proven that Nigerian excellence is inevitable when opportunity meets preparation.”
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to sports development as a strategic tool for youth empowerment, economic growth, and global diplomacy.
