As part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed push for peace in Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has met with key traditional leaders—the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John.
The meeting, held in Benue State, followed a presidential directive to urgently establish a strategic peace committee that will tackle the root causes of ongoing violence and restore lasting stability across the region.
Senator Akume, who described the security situation as deeply troubling, assured the monarchs that the Federal Government is committed to ending the bloodshed in the “Food Basket of the Nation.”
> “Remain alert and report any signs of unrest or infiltration. The President is fully committed and will not let the people of Benue down,” Akume said.
He emphasized the importance of involving respected traditional institutions in the peace process, acknowledging their crucial role in community leadership, dialogue, and conflict resolution.
Both the Tor Tiv and Och’Idoma praised the President’s proactive approach and pledged their full support for efforts to secure peace in the state. They also urged residents of Benue to embrace unity and cooperate with the proposed peace committee.
The SGF-led peace committee has already commenced stakeholder consultations, with a clear mandate to present practical and long-term solutions to end violence in Benue.
