In a historic move to strengthen Nigeria’s global partnerships, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
The announcement was made during President Tinubu’s state visit to the Caribbean nation, where he addressed a special joint session of Saint Lucia’s Senate and House of Assembly. During his address, he emphasized the shared African heritage and Pan-African values that connect both regions.
President Tinubu described the new diplomatic alliance as “a symbolic bridge” that will enhance cooperation between Nigeria and Eastern Caribbean nations, positioning both regions to benefit from deeper cultural, economic, and political ties.
Visa Waiver and Scholarship Offers
In a significant gesture of goodwill, the Nigerian leader proposed visa waivers for OECS officials holding official passports. He also announced full academic scholarships for students from the OECS to study in Nigerian institutions. The aim, he noted, is to promote cross-cultural understanding and foster a stronger connection among people of African descent.
“This occasion serves as a testament to the enduring ideals of Pan-Africanism and the unyielding desire for unity and collaboration,” President Tinubu said during his speech at the parliamentary session.
A Ceremonial Welcome and Strategic Dialogue
President Tinubu was received with full honors, including a ceremonial guard of honour. Attending the session were members of the Saint Lucian Parliament, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, other OECS leaders, and Nigeria’s diplomatic delegation.
The Nigerian president also outlined key areas for strategic collaboration, including education, trade, tourism, and technology. He expressed optimism that this new partnership will create tangible benefits for both Nigeria and the Eastern Caribbean bloc.
Looking Ahead: A Stronger South-South Partnership
Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister welcomed the new diplomatic ties and thanked President Tinubu for initiating this engagement. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the relationship and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
The visit marks a significant step in Nigeria’s broader foreign policy agenda to enhance South-South cooperation and increase engagement with Caribbean nations.
As global dynamics continue to shift, this new partnership highlights Nigeria’s commitment to building alliances that reflect shared history, mutual respect, and future-focused collaboration.
