Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Power Supply, Partners Siemens to Boost Nigeria’s Energy Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says his administration is taking the power sector very seriously as part of its strategy to enhance the livelihoods of Nigerians and drive sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at a meeting with a delegation from Siemens Energy led by Dietmar Siersdorfer, the company’s Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, the President said electricity remains the backbone of Nigeria’s industrial, health, and educational development. The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was also attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun.

Tinubu emphasized that without stable power, industrial growth and economic transformation cannot be achieved. He described electricity as one of humanity’s greatest innovations, adding that Nigeria is determined to harness it fully to unlock its vast human and material resources.

> “There is no industrial growth or economic development without power. We are taking this very seriously because our education, healthcare, and transportation sectors all depend on energy,” President Tinubu said.

He commended the partnership between the Nigerian government and Siemens Energy under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), stressing that the collaboration aligns with his Renewed Hope Agenda to deliver sustainable infrastructure and inclusive development. Tinubu also directed the expansion of major transformer substations to boost national grid capacity.

> “We want everyone to see the glory of our economic recovery and the banishment of poverty,” he added.

According to a statement obtained by Mediaplusng.com, the President assured that his administration will provide the necessary resources to complete the phased power project, which is expected to position Nigeria as a regional power hub.

Power Sector Records Milestones Under the Presidential Power Initiative

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, briefed the President on key achievements in the sector, including the decentralization of the electricity market and the signing of the Electricity Act 2023, which has attracted over $2.2 billion in new investments. He said 15 states have now activated independent electricity markets.

Adelabu revealed that under the pilot phase of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), Siemens Energy has delivered and commissioned 10 mobile substations and 10 high-capacity transformers, adding over 984 megawatts of transmission capacity to the national grid.

He noted that the next phase of the project—covering five key substations in Abeokuta, Offa, Ibadan, Sokoto, and Onitsha—is already underway, with two expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said the project will boost ease of doing business, create new jobs, and reduce poverty through improved energy access.

Siemens Energy’s Dietmar Siersdorfer reaffirmed the company’s commitment to completing the substations on schedule and training Nigerian engineers to ensure local capacity development and technology transfer. He said the PPI will not only improve electricity access but also transform Nigeria into a regional energy hub.

A representative of the German Ambassador, Johannes Lehne, also pledged continued support from the German government toward Nigeria’s power development goals.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Presidential Power Initiative remains one of the most ambitious infrastructure programs under President Tinubu’s administration, reflecting his focus on reliable electricity as a driver of industrialization and economic renewal.
