President Bola Tinubu calls on state governors to fully support the establishment of state police and ensure the effective implementation of local government autonomy across Nigeria. He makes the appeal at the 14th meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Caucus held in Abuja, stressing that security and grassroots governance remain critical to national stability.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the President tells APC governors and leaders from other political parties that state police is no longer optional, given Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. He urges political leaders to rise above partisan interests and embrace reforms that strengthen internal security and protect citizens at the community level.
President Tinubu also draws attention to the recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial and administrative autonomy to local government councils. He says the ruling must go beyond legal victory and translate into practical action, insisting that statutory allocations meant for councils must reach them directly without interference.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the President warns against any attempt to undermine the judgment, noting that strong and independent local governments are essential for development, service delivery, and democratic growth. He emphasizes that local councils are closest to the people and must be empowered to function effectively.
The President explains that true federalism cannot thrive without functional local governments and improved internal security architecture. He adds that state police, when properly structured and regulated, will complement federal security agencies and enhance intelligence gathering at the grassroots.
Mr Tinubu further urges governors to take ownership of reforms that promote accountability, transparency, and people-centered governance. He says political leaders must demonstrate commitment by ensuring policies are implemented in ways that directly benefit citizens.
In addition, the President calls for greater inclusion of women in the APC National Caucus and other key decision-making structures. He stresses that gender balance strengthens democracy and brings diverse perspectives needed for effective governance.
President Tinubu concludes by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic reforms, security restructuring, and inclusive governance, urging party leaders and governors to work collectively to move the country forward.
