A fatal road accident along the Yauri–Birnin Kebbi highway in Kebbi State has claimed the life of a driver and left 13 students from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, as the students were returning to Sokoto from Ilorin, Kwara State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash happened near Yauri town when the vehicle conveying the students veered off the road. The driver was killed instantly at the scene, while all 13 students on board sustained various degrees of injuries.
Medical sources confirmed that eight of the students suffered bone fractures. Five of them, in critical condition, have been transferred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto for specialized care. Others with less severe injuries are receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the accident, but unconfirmed reports suggest that fatigue and over-speeding may have been contributing factors.
The management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, has expressed deep concern over the incident and is working closely with medical teams to ensure the affected students receive the necessary care.
The Kebbi State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and to reinforce safety measures along the busy Yauri–Birnin Kebbi route.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter road safety compliance and improved travel conditions for commuters, especially students who frequently travel long distances across states.
