Nigeria Mourns a Statesman: Buhari Passes Away in London, Tinubu Declares 7 Days of National Mourning

Former President Muhammadu Buhari died at the age of 82. The ex-leader passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a London hospital, following a brief, undisclosed illness. His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in an official statement, announced Buhari’s passing and directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria. In honour of his service, Tinubu also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days and summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to pay tribute to Buhari’s legacy.

> “President Buhari was a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman,” Tinubu said. “He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication both as a military leader and as a democratically elected president. His legacy will continue to shape our national conscience.”

Buhari first led Nigeria as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and later returned to power as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. During both tenures, he championed anti-corruption, discipline in governance, and national unity.

National Leaders Pay Respects

Buhari’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum. Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Ibrahim Babangida described him as a committed patriot who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s development

Vice President Kashim Shettima called it “a black Sunday in Nigeria,” and described Buhari as one of the country’s “greatest leaders of all time.” Former Vice Presidents Yemi Osinbajo and Atiku Abubakar also issued heartfelt tributes, noting Buhari’s unwavering discipline, humility, and service to the nation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Buhari’s integrity and commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress, while other national leaders—including Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and numerous state governors—joined in paying respects.
