Tragedy struck in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, after a boat mishap left several passengers missing and feared dead. According to reports, at least 25 persons have been rescued, while more than 25 others are still unaccounted for.
Mediaplusng.com gathered that the ill-fated boat, carrying dozens of villagers, capsized while navigating the river in the early hours of the day. Rescue efforts by locals and emergency teams are ongoing, as hopes remain high to recover more survivors.
Authorities and community leaders have expressed concern over the recurring cases of boat accidents in Sokoto and other riverine areas of northern Nigeria. Mediaplusng.com reports that poor safety measures, overloading, and lack of life jackets have been identified as major causes of such disasters.
Meanwhile, residents have called on the Sokoto State Government and federal authorities to enforce stricter regulations on water transportation and provide safer alternatives for rural communities that depend heavily on river travel.
