Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The week-long event will run from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in high-level debates, and attend several side events, including a roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing He will also unveil Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders.
On arrival, Shettima was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Nigeria’s Permanent Mission officials to the UN, and other senior government representatives. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism, stressing the nation’s push for fair global financial reforms and stronger representation at the UN Security Council.
Mediaplusng.com reports that Nigeria is championing the United Nations Global Convention on Taxation and reinforcing Africa’s common demand for at least two permanent seats on the Security Council, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. Tuggar also highlighted Nigeria’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations and the country’s firm stance on global conflicts, including in Sudan, Gaza, and Eastern Congo.
Meanwhile, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani said Nigeria’s participation in UNGA 80 will strengthen the country’s image as a top investment destination in Africa, with focus areas including solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Omoniyi Oduwole added that Nigeria will host a “Nigeria Investment Day” to showcase priority sectors such as solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology, all tied to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
