The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other political figures for allegedly using Nigerians to advance personal political agendas through party coalitions.
Speaking during his monthly media parley at his official residence in Abuja, Wike condemned what he described as a self-serving alliance involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that such coalitions are not rooted in the genuine interests of Nigerians.
> “Just because you have personal issues with someone, you claim Nigerians are angry and proceed to form a coalition,” Wike said.
“Let’s take the issues of Nigeria seriously. I challenge all of them to show their scorecards. What did they achieve while in office?”
The FCT Minister urged politicians to reflect on their records rather than exploit national challenges for political gain.
Wike Addresses Ongoing FCT Teachers’ Strike
On the prolonged strike by FCT teachers, Wike clarified that the matter is beyond the direct control of the FCT Administration. He explained that the outstanding salary arrears, estimated at ₦18 billion, are the responsibility of the Area Councils, not the FCTA.
> “I have taken steps, including withholding the 10% Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) meant for Area Councils,” he stated. “But the FCTA cannot pay debts it did not incur.”
Wike reaffirmed his commitment to education reform but emphasized the need for accountability and collaboration from local council authorities.
