The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has told the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, to stay out of Rivers State politics, warning that interference in the state could have consequences, Mediaplusng.com reports.
Wike issued the warning during a “thank you” visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, responding to Basiru’s earlier comments urging the APC National Vice Chairman, South-South, Victor Giadom, to challenge Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Giadom had referred to Fubara as a “so-called governor” during Wike’s visit to Gokana LGA on December 30, 2025, claiming that Fubara’s political success depended on Wike’s support.
The FCT Minister said Giadom should tell Basiru to avoid Rivers politics for his own good. “Tell your National Secretary to leave Rivers alone. Go and ask those who have tried it before. Don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted,” Wike warned.
He also cautioned politicians seeking access to the alleged N600 billion in the state treasury to stay away. “When the Rivers people supported President Bola Tinubu in 2023, nobody helped us. Now food is ready, and everyone is coming. Leave Rivers State alone,” Wike added, Mediaplusng.com reports.
During the visit, Wike thanked the people of Oyigbo for their continued support. Chairman of Oyigbo LGA, Mr. Okechukwu Agara, praised the minister for his contributions, promising unwavering backing.
Felix Nweke, representing Tai, Oyigbo, and Eleme Federal Constituency, assured Wike of continued support, noting that development in the area had stalled since Wike left office in 2023. Ambassador Desmond Akawor, Chairman of Renewed Hope, Rivers State, expressed hope that the situation would improve with the anticipated leadership changes in 2027.
Wike’s statement signals a firm stance against external political interference in Rivers State, reinforcing his influence and control over local politics ahead of the next election cycle.
