Yobe ASUU Vows to Continue Strike as Four Demands Remain Unmet

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University (YSU) branch, has declared that its ongoing strike will not be called off until all outstanding demands are fully addressed by the state government.

This position was made known by the ASUU Chairman, YSU branch, Ahmed Ibrahim-Karage, in a press statement released to journalists in Damaturu, the state capital.

According to Ibrahim-Karage, while the Yobe State Government has implemented the N70,000 minimum wage for academic staff starting from July 2025, other critical issues raised by the union remain unresolved.

“We wish to clarify that the strike action declared by ASUU-YSU is still in force. The only demand met so far is the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage from July 2025,” the statement reads.

The union highlighted four key demands that are yet to be implemented:

1. Approval and implementation of academic staff promotions as approved by the University Governing Council.

2. Payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025.

3. Settlement of arrears from the Minimum Wage Consequential Adjustment (2019-2024).

4. Payment of the 35% and 25% salary awards (2023-2025) for professors and other academic ranks.

Additionally, the arrears of the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage from January 2024 to June 2025 remain unpaid.

The ASUU Chairman further stated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Yobe State Government and the ASUU-YSU branch, but the union insists the strike will continue until all agreed demands are fulfilled.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Yobe State University management has announced the commencement of the second semester academic activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Registrar, Garba Ahmadu-Girgir, the 2024/2025 second semester officially begins today, Monday, July 28, 2025.
