Hospital Renovation, Missing Funds
Zamfara’s factional lawmakers allege Governor Dauda Lawal misused ₦9 billion on hospital works and demand answers on post-subsidy, NG-CARES funds—impeachment looms.
A break-away bloc of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, led by Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi has opened a fresh confrontation with Governor Dauda Lawal, citing financial recklessness and abuse of office.
At a parallel plenary in Gusau on Thursday, the members labelled the governor’s ₦9 billion renovation of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital “callous” and “an open theft of public funds.”
Legislators recalled that the hospital was built for roughly ₦1 billion under former Governors Aliyu Shinkafi and Abdulaziz Yari. They now question why a renovation—mainly painting and upgrades—should be nine times the original price tag.
The faction also demanded a breakdown of ₦200 billion in post-subsidy removal support reportedly disbursed to Zamfara over the last ten months (₦20 billion per month from the Federal Government). According to the lawmakers, the money is “unaccounted for.”
Equally contentious is the ₦49 billion NG-CARES allocation, earmarked to empower 250 youths in all 147 wards—especially those hit by banditry. The legislators claim the programme stalled despite a ₦2.6 billion counter-fund paid by ex-Governor Bello Matawalle in 2023.
The bloc has issued the executive a 14-day deadline to provide full financial statements. Failure, it warns, will trigger impeachment proceedings against Governor Lawal.
Beyond finance, members slammed the administration’s handling of security. Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara decried persistent attacks along the Gusau–Maru–Talata Mafara road and cited a ₦17 million ransom collected in Morai without government response. Legislators support Community Protection Guards but fault the state’s “indifference” after guard members were killed.
Calls were also made for free education and state scholarship schemes for indigent students, led by Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru.
Ratcheting up pressure, Hon. Ibrahim Tudu Tukur (Bakura) proposed a vote of no confidence, accusing Governor Lawal of deepening division, undermining Islamic institutions, and failing to safeguard citizens.
