The Zamfara State Government has strongly denied claims that Governor Dauda Lawal borrowed N34 billion in loans, describing the report by Sahara Reporters as misleading and unprofessional.
In a statement released in Gusau, the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the report published by Sahara Reporters was “false and sensational,” aimed at creating confusion and misleading the public. The controversial story titled “Exclusive: Budget Documents Expose Zamfara Governor Lawal’s False Claim of No Borrowing — N34 Billion Loans Recorded Under His Watch” was published on Monday, alleging that the governor’s administration took loans despite his public denial.
The Zamfara Government dismissed the report, saying it reflects Sahara Reporters’ style of “gonzo journalism” — a type of reporting known for its lack of objectivity and accuracy. According to the government, the N34 billion referenced in the report was not a new loan taken by the current administration but rather an interest payment on existing debts inherited from previous governments.
“The 2023 budget, which was prepared by the former administration under Bello Matawalle, included over N53 billion for loan servicing,” the statement explained. “Out of this, N34 billion was spent on repaying interest on old loans — not new borrowing by Governor Lawal.”
The statement reaffirmed that since taking office, Governor Lawal has maintained a strict stance on fiscal discipline and has not approved any local or international loans.
“The governor is committed to reducing Zamfara’s debt profile, not adding to it,” the spokesperson added.
The government also challenged Sahara Reporters to present any evidence proving that Governor Lawal had signed or approved any new loan agreements since assuming office.
It further called on the platform to direct its investigations toward the previous administration and demand accountability for the loans taken during that period — loans which, the government claims, did not translate into tangible development in the state.
The Zamfara State Government concluded by urging media platforms to prioritize accuracy and integrity, especially when reporting on financial matters that affect public trust and governance.
