Zamfara Govt Alleges Harassment of Opposition Using Federal Security Agencies

The Zamfara State Government raises alarm over what it describes as the harassment and intimidation of opposition figures in the state, allegedly carried out through federal security institutions. The state government warns that the development poses a serious threat to democracy and the neutrality of Nigeria’s security architecture.

In a statement made public on Wednesday, the Zamfara State Government alleges that the Minister of State for Defence uses the Office of the National Security Adviser to intimidate political opponents, Mediaplusng.com reports. The government says it is compelled to inform Nigerians following what it describes as a disturbing incident involving the alleged abduction of a government official.

According to the state government, Saleem Abubakar, a Technical Assistant in the Office of the Zamfara State Governor, is allegedly abducted in Abuja by operatives described as a special unit linked to the Office of the National Security Adviser. The government claims the incident occurs without an arrest warrant and outside due legal process.

The Zamfara Government further alleges that the operation is politically motivated and syndicated through the NSA’s office, allegedly at the instigation of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Mediaplusng.com notes. It claims that after the abduction, the victim is moved between different locations in an attempt to conceal his whereabouts.

Describing the situation as alarming, the state government warns that the alleged use of national security institutions for political persecution sets a dangerous precedent. It says such actions undermine public trust and weaken the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system.

The government insists that if there are allegations against Saleem Abubakar or any other individual, the proper course of action is prosecution through the courts, not what it describes as unlawful detention or intimidation.

Calling for urgent intervention, the Zamfara State Government appeals to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in and ensure that the Office of the National Security Adviser remains neutral and professional. It warns that continued allegations of political interference could damage Nigeria’s international image.

The state government says it is closely monitoring the situation and will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion. It reiterates its demand for accountability, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law, stressing that no political interest should override constitutional rights.
