Mediaplusng.com reports that Mohammed Lawal, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recently concluded Kaura Namoda South Constituency by-election in Zamfara State, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawal, who lost the by-election to the APC candidate, Kamilu Sa’idu, announced his decision during a consultation meeting for Zamfara Central organized by the APC support group, Yazeed Project, in Gusau, the state capital.
According to Lawal, his defection is a result of neglect by the PDP leadership after the election, despite his active role in the party’s success in previous polls.
> “What influenced my decision to leave the PDP is personal. I am convinced that Governor Dauda Lawal has no feeling for the majority of people who worked day and night for his victory,” he said.
Lawal explains that he joined the APC because of its “clear vision, unity, and good intentions” for the people of Zamfara. He expresses confidence in the leadership of the APC under the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, former governor Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, and the state party chairman, Tukur Danfulani.
> “I believe the APC will not neglect me the way PDP did, especially after I spent my personal resources to support the party’s victory in the 2023 governorship election,” he added.
Receiving Lawal into the party, the State APC Chairman, Tukur Danfulani—represented by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris—describes the defection as a “major gain” for the APC.
> “On behalf of the APC leadership in the state, particularly the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, we are happy to receive Mohammed Lawal into the APC,” Idris said.
He notes that Lawal’s decision was influenced by the overwhelming support the APC received during the by-election and the clear direction of voters in the area.
> “During the by-election, he observed that the people voted massively for the APC. He said the process was free and fair, and that the result reflected the will of the electorate,” Idris added.
Mediaplusng.com also gathered that more political figures, including state lawmakers, local government chairmen, and party executives, are expected to join the APC in the coming weeks.
> “This is just the beginning. Many political leaders, from state assembly members to local government chairmen, are preparing to join the APC. We will receive them in large numbers,” Idris concluded.
