Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, says the ongoing local government elections serve as a key test for Nigeria’s preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections. He makes the statement while casting his vote in Mafa Local Government Area during the state’s chairmanship and councillorship polls.

According to Mediaplusng.com, Governor Zulum votes at Ajari II Polling Unit 006 in his hometown of Mafa, where he expresses satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the exercise and the turnout of voters across the area.

The governor describes local government elections as the foundation of democratic practice, noting that credible grassroots polls build public confidence in the electoral system. He says lessons learned from the conduct of the council elections will help strengthen future national elections, including the 2027 general polls.

Mediaplusng.com reports that Governor Zulum commends the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission and security agencies for maintaining order and ensuring that voters exercise their civic rights without intimidation or disruption.

Speaking to journalists after voting, the governor says a transparent and credible local government election signals what Nigerians should expect in future elections. He adds that effective organisation, voter participation, and adherence to electoral rules remain critical to democratic growth in the country.

Governor Zulum also expresses optimism about the prospects of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections. He says he expects the ruling party to perform strongly in the 2027 general elections, including the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly contests.

He urges residents of Borno State to continue to support peaceful democratic processes and avoid actions that could undermine stability. According to him, sustained peace and active citizen participation are essential for development at both the local and national levels.

The governor further calls on electoral officials to remain neutral and professional throughout the exercise, stressing that the credibility of the process matters more than individual or party interests.

As voting continues across the state, observers note that the outcome of the local government elections is expected to shape political alignments and governance at the grassroots level, while also offering insights into Nigeria’s readiness for the 2027 general elections.
