Security operatives escorting the convoy of Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum have opened fire on Boko Haram terrorists on their way to Maiduguri from Gomboru Ngala after a three-day tour.
Though the terrorists motive was not known, the convoy’s security escort went after them and exchanged fire for nearly half an hour between 12:50 pm and 1:30 pm.
This, is according to yerwa express, a local news outlet in Maiduguri.
The governor went on a tour to some local government areas following attacks by the terrorists. It is not clear if the governor was in the convoy.
A source who was in one of the entourage confirmed the incident to our reporter in a phone conversation.
The governor was in Wulgo with his entourage to assess the security situation.
‘On our way to Maiduguri, after leaving Wulgo, the incident happened,’ a source said.
The sudden eruption of gunshot sounds has caused panic across the convoy, with some ‘thinking it was an ambush.’
This paper learned that the convoy ran into the terrorists, seemingly on a sinister mission.
The security operatives in the convoy opened fire on them and dispersed them after exchanging fire.
Another source said ‘thank God, we are back to Maiduguri now.’
In the crossfire, this paper learned that some of the Civilian Joint Task Force and some hunters–the figures of which are not yet ascertained–sustained some injuries.
