NAF CONSTITUTES CRASH INVESTIGATION BOARD

The Nigerian Air Force has constituted a 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board to determine the cause of the fatal crash involving its ATR 42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed on October 5, killing all those on board. The investigation aims to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, says the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has directed sustained search and recovery operations alongside a comprehensive investigation.

The board is headed by Air Vice Marshal F.O. Ankeli, while E.O.E. Ebiowe, who led the Investigation and Recovery Team, is coordinating the wider response.

The investigation team comprises specialists in aviation operations, flight safety, piloting, air traffic control, aircraft engineering, maintenance and medical services.

Representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau are also part of the board, bringing civilian aviation expertise to the investigation.

According to the Air Force, the board will examine operational, technical, environmental, human and organisational factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Its work will include the systematic examination, documentation and preservation of relevant evidence to establish the facts and identify both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident.

The findings are expected to inform evidence-based recommendations to address any identified deficiencies, strengthen aviation safety and reduce the risk of future incidents.

The NAF also expresses its commitment to supporting the bereaved families as they cope with the loss of their loved ones.

Acknowledging public interest in the investigation, the Air Force promises to provide updates as verified information becomes available.

However, it cautions against speculation, stressing that conclusions about the cause of the crash would be premature until the investigation is completed and its findings are properly considered.

The investigation is expected to provide greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and identify any necessary safety improvements.
