IKOT ABASI INDUSTRIAL REVIVAL: TINUBU’S POLICIES SHAPE AKWA IBOM’S ECONOMIC FUTURE

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The industrial future of Akwa Ibom State is attracting renewed attention as the Federal Government and private investors pursue major projects around the Ikot Abasi industrial corridor.

At the centre of this development is the Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone, an initiative approved in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

But what has changed since President Bola Tinubu assumed office? And how are federal policies, investment commitments and infrastructure projects translating into economic opportunities for the people?

One of the most significant developments is the proposed revitalisation of the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria, ALSCON.

In August 2025, President Tinubu announced that ALSCON’s management had submitted a 465-million-dollar investment proposal for the restoration of the facility, with a six-year rehabilitation plan under consideration.

If implemented, the investment could restore aluminium production, strengthen local manufacturing and position Ikot Abasi as an important industrial centre in West Africa.

Another major opportunity lies in Nigeria’s gas resources.

The Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority has identified a proposed 120-million-dollar gas-flare elimination project associated with the Qua Iboe Export Hub.

The project is designed to convert gas that would otherwise be wasted through flaring into commercially valuable energy resources.

The zone has also received approval for a proposed 567-megawatt gas-fired power plant, which could supply electricity to industrial operators and potentially contribute surplus power to the national grid.

However, these projects must move beyond regulatory approvals and investment proposals to actual construction and commercial operations.

Maritime infrastructure is another important part of the industrial corridor’s development.

In March 2026, vessels berthed at the Liberty Free Zone facility, marking a significant development in efforts to establish Ikot Abasi as a maritime and logistics destination.

The proposed seaport is expected to improve cargo handling, facilitate international trade and provide businesses with access to markets across the eastern region and beyond.

The Federal Government has also been linked to plans for a private passenger and cargo airport within the zone, an initiative that could improve connectivity for investors, workers and industrial operators.

On investment, the Chief Executive of OGFZA, Bamanga Jada, reported in December 2024 that the free zone had attracted more than one billion dollars in foreign direct investment within 17 months.

The figure highlights the scale of investor interest, although the amount already deployed in operational facilities requires further verification.

Electricity transmission remains another critical challenge.

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company is working to address a reported four-billion-naira right-of-way issue affecting the proposed 58-kilometre, 330-kilovolt transmission line linking Qua Iboe Terminal to Ikot Abasi.

Completing the line would help meet the energy requirements of industries expected to operate within the corridor.

Beyond the industrial facilities, the anticipated benefits include employment, skills development, local business opportunities, improved logistics and increased economic activity across the Niger Delta.

But the real measure of success will be the number of projects completed, factories operating, Nigerians employed and businesses benefiting from the investments.

For residents of Ikot Abasi and surrounding communities, the expectation is clear: industrial development must translate into better livelihoods, infrastructure and sustainable opportunities.

The foundation was laid under the previous administration. The Tinubu administration now faces the task of converting investment proposals, policy interventions and infrastructure commitments into measurable economic results.

Ikot Abasi’s industrial revival could reshape Akwa Ibom’s economic future. But the ultimate test will be what is delivered on the ground.
