FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has reportedly expressed deep sorrow over the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel following their on-field collision during a Spanish second-division match.
In a statement circulating online and attributed to the goalkeeper, Owono reportedly extended his condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and everyone at Tenerife.
He expressed regret over the incident, maintaining that he never intended to hurt the striker and that the collision happened while he was attempting to clear the ball.
The goalkeeper reportedly said he wished he could turn back the hands of time, adding that he would give anything for De Miguel to still be alive.
Owono also reportedly disclosed that he had received insults, death threats and abusive messages directed at both him and his family following the tragedy.
He appealed for restraint, acknowledging the anger and grief surrounding the incident while urging people not to assume that he deliberately intended to cause harm.
The reported statement highlights the emotional and psychological consequences of a tragedy involving two footballers, one of whom lost his life.
De Miguel, 30, died after suffering a cardiac arrest following the collision during the match between FC Andorra and Tenerife.
Meanwhile, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. Owono’s actions and any potential responsibility must be assessed through the appropriate investigative and legal processes.
As the football community mourns De Miguel, the tragedy also raises concerns about online harassment and threats against individuals involved in sporting incidents.
While accountability and justice remain important, threats against players and their families have no place in football.
