PETER OBI RAISES CONCERN OVER ADC COURT RULING, CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF OPPOSITION POLITICS

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over the Federal High Court ruling in Abuja nullifying the emergence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman and the actions taken under his leadership.

In a statement “Do Not Undermine Democracy,” Obi described the development as shocking, unsettling and surprising, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

Although he said he would not challenge the authority of the judiciary or the court’s power to determine disputes according to the law, the former Anambra State governor questioned the timing of the decision and its implications for political stability ahead of the elections.

Obi argued that political parties and their candidates should have sufficient certainty to prepare for a general election, warning that prolonged legal disputes close to election day could create unnecessary confusion for voters and political stakeholders.

He also alleged that the ruling party was engineering instability within opposition parties, drawing parallels with the challenges he said he had experienced in the Labour Party.

Obi further alleged that political intimidation and violence were being used to weaken opposition campaigns and restrict the space for democratic participation.

Emphasising the importance of the judiciary, he maintained that democracy must ultimately preserve the people’s right to freely choose their leaders through credible elections.

According to him, one of the fundamental principles of democracy is that voters, rather than courtrooms, should determine who governs through the ballot.

He also called for greater protection of opposition politics, warning against developments that could weaken multiparty democracy in Nigeria.

Obi linked the importance of sustaining democratic institutions to the political situation in West Africa, where several countries have experienced military takeovers in recent years.

He said that, if elected president, he would give special attention to ensuring that opposition parties remain stable, function effectively and are not subjected to persecution that prevents their candidates from participating in elections.

The former presidential candidate concluded by urging political stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions, respect the rights of opposition parties and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

His message comes amid growing political and legal developments within Nigeria’s opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.

Peter Obi insists that democracy is strengthened when opposition parties are allowed to thrive and citizens retain the freedom to choose their leaders.

“A New Nigeria is POssible,” he declared.
