CAN PETER OBI BENEFIT FROM ATIKU’S DISQUALIFICATION? FOUR POSSIBLE SCENARIOS

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A major political development has thrown Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race into fresh uncertainty. A Federal High Court judgment nullifying the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by former Senate President David Mark, has also affected the party’s presidential primary that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.

Presiding Judge Peter Lifu invalidated the party leadership and decisions taken under it, including the process that produced Atiku as the ADC presidential flagbearer.

Although the ADC has indicated plans to appeal, the judgment raises a critical question: Could Atiku’s political setback create an opportunity for Peter Obi?

Here are four possible scenarios.

SCENARIO ONE: PETER OBI EMERGES AS THE OPPOSITION’S CONSENSUS CANDIDATE.

If Atiku’s nomination is ultimately invalidated and the ADC leadership crisis remains unresolved, opposition figures could reconsider their options. Peter Obi, who commands considerable grassroots support, particularly among young Nigerians, could emerge as a rallying point for those seeking a united opposition.

SCENARIO TWO: ATIKU WINS ON APPEAL.

Atiku has not exhausted his legal options. If the appellate courts overturn the judgment, his ADC candidacy could be restored, potentially returning the opposition to its original political calculations.

SCENARIO THREE: ADC CONDUCTS A FRESH PRIMARY.

If the court’s decision stands and the party is required to repeat its nomination process, a fresh political contest could emerge. This might give Obi and other opposition aspirants another opportunity to negotiate or compete for the party’s ticket, subject to applicable electoral laws and court orders.

SCENARIO FOUR: THE OPPOSITION BECOMES MORE DIVIDED.

Rather than strengthening the opposition, the crisis could deepen existing divisions. If Atiku’s supporters refuse to support another candidate, while Obi’s supporters insist on his emergence, the opposition could enter the election fragmented, potentially benefiting President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC.

Ultimately, the legal battle within the ADC could have consequences far beyond the party.

For Peter Obi, Atiku’s predicament may present a political opportunity, but opportunity does not automatically translate into victory.

The bigger question is whether Nigeria’s opposition leaders can put their personal ambitions aside, resolve their differences and agree on a candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge to President Tinubu in 2027.

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

What do you think? Can Peter Obi become the opposition’s consensus candidate if Atiku loses his ADC ticket?
