Top leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) pay courtesy visits to former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, in Minna, Niger State, as part of ongoing consultations to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system. The visits reflect the party’s resolve to promote political stability, good governance, and national unity ahead of future elections.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the delegation is led by the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewale Adebayo, alongside senior party executives. The team meets with the elder statesmen to seek guidance, share perspectives on national challenges, and reaffirm the party’s commitment to democratic ideals and responsible political participation.
During the engagements, both General Babangida and General Abdulsalami commend the SDP for its focus on democracy and national development. They stress the importance of collective responsibility among political parties and citizens to sustain democracy and ensure it delivers real benefits to Nigerians. The former leaders urge political actors to place national interest above personal ambition in order to strengthen democratic institutions.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar emphasizes that democracy thrives when political parties act responsibly and promote peaceful competition. He notes that Nigeria’s democratic journey requires patience, dialogue, and commitment from all stakeholders. He also offers prayers for peace, unity, and economic recovery across the country, expressing confidence that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges with the right leadership and cooperation.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Prince Adewale Adebayo describes the visit as timely and impactful, noting that the guidance received will help reposition the party and offer Nigerians a credible political alternative. He says the SDP remains focused on addressing major national issues such as insecurity, corruption, poverty, and weak institutions through people-centered policies and inclusive governance.
Prince Adebayo adds that effective leadership will be critical as Nigeria prepares for the next general election. He says the SDP is committed to building a strong internal structure, promoting discipline within its ranks, and presenting clear policy options that resonate with ordinary Nigerians. He assures that the party’s engagement with elder statesmen will continue as part of its broader strategy to strengthen democracy.
The Acting National Chairman of the SDP, Professor Sadiq Gombe, says the party is undergoing internal reforms to prepare for the 2027 elections. He explains that political parties must first put their houses in order before they can deliver good governance to the people. According to him, the SDP is focused on transparency, accountability, and internal democracy.
Professor Gombe also reveals that part of the visit is to commiserate with General Abdulsalami Abubakar over recent family losses. He says the party seeks the former leader’s prayers and blessings as it continues its efforts to contribute positively to Nigeria’s political development.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Gaza Jonathan, Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, says Nigeria has the potential to achieve sustainable development with transparent and people-oriented leadership. He stresses that inclusive policies and responsible governance are essential for unlocking the country’s vast human and natural resources.
The SDP says the visits to Minna form part of a broader consultation process with elder statesmen and key stakeholders across the country. The party believes such engagements are necessary to deepen democratic culture, promote national dialogue, and build consensus ahead of future elections.
As preparations continue, the SDP reiterates its commitment to peaceful politics, issue-based campaigns, and democratic stability. Party leaders say they remain optimistic that sustained engagement, credible leadership, and collective effort will help Nigeria strengthen its democracy and achieve lasting development.
