NIGERIAN STARS CHASE EUROPEAN VICTORIES

Nigerian football stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman headline the country’s representatives facing major challenges as the UEFA Champions League enters its second matchday.

Osimhen’s Galatasaray host Barcelona on Tuesday, while Lookman and Atlético Madrid welcome Manchester United in two of the most anticipated fixtures involving Nigerian players.

Other Nigerians expected to attract attention include Christian Nwachukwu, who represents Sabah against Slavia Prague, Moses Usor’s LASK, and midfielder Raphael Onyedika’s Stuttgart. Nigerian left-back Zaidu Sanusi is also part of the wider contingent, although reports indicate that injury could rule him out of Porto’s meeting with Real Betis.

Following a difficult opening round for the featured Nigerian players, the focus now shifts to improved performances, valuable points and opportunities to make their mark on Europe’s biggest club stage.

OSIMHEN TARGETS BARCELONA UPSET

Victor Osimhen is expected to be one of Galatasaray’s key attacking weapons when the Turkish club welcome Barcelona to RAMS Park.

Galatasaray are seeking a response after losing 3-1 away to Sporting CP in their Champions League opener. Barcelona, meanwhile, arrive in Istanbul after an impressive start to their European campaign, including a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.

Osimhen’s fitness could prove crucial for the Turkish champions. The Nigerian striker recently returned from a groin injury, coming off the bench to provide an assist for Mario Lemina’s stoppage-time goal in Galatasaray’s 3-1 league victory over Kasimpasa.

The 27-year-old has recorded six goals and three assists in five league appearances this season, underlining his importance to Galatasaray’s attack.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has acknowledged the threat posed by the Nigerian forward, describing him as a fantastic striker and praising the quality of Galatasaray’s squad.

Osimhen, for his part, recognises the challenge but welcomes the opportunity to face one of Europe’s leading clubs.

The Nigerian has previously scored against Barcelona, finding the net for Napoli in a 1-1 draw during the first leg of their 2024 Champions League round-of-16 tie.

Galatasaray, however, have struggled historically against the Spanish giants, recording only one victory in eight previous Champions League meetings.

Osimhen will hope to recover fully from his injury and inspire a result that could revive Galatasaray’s European campaign.

LOOKMAN PREPARES FOR MANCHESTER UNITED

Ademola Lookman faces another demanding assignment as Atlético Madrid host Manchester United in the Spanish capital, with kick-off scheduled for 8 p.m. Nigerian time, according to the supplied fixture information.

Atlético began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool but have since responded with four consecutive victories across competitions.

Manchester United opened their European campaign with a 4-0 win over Sabah and will aim to maintain their momentum against Diego Simeone’s side.

Lookman, however, is still working to rediscover his best form. The Nigerian has scored once in nine appearances across competitions this season and could face competition for a starting place, with Julián Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone among Atlético’s attacking options.

Atlético manager Diego Simeone has acknowledged that Lookman is not yet performing at the level expected but has encouraged him to remain confident and continue taking risks.

The manager’s message highlights the importance of the Nigerian’s dribbling, creativity and willingness to challenge defenders.

Lookman will hope to use those qualities to influence the contest against United, whether he starts or comes off the bench.

For the Nigeria international, the fixture presents an opportunity to regain confidence and strengthen his position in Atlético’s attacking plans.

### NIGERIAN SHOWDOWN: SABAH VERSUS SLAVIA PRAGUE

Another interesting Nigerian storyline emerges from Tuesday’s meeting between Sabah and Slavia Prague.

Christian Nwachukwu represents Sabah, while Slavia Prague have four Nigerians in their squad: Mubarak Suleiman, Emmanuel Ayaosi, David Moses and Samuel Isife.

Sabah will be looking to recover from a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in their opening match. Slavia Prague also need a response after losing 3-2 to Lens.

The presence of Nigerian players on both sides adds another layer of interest to the encounter, with an opportunity for one or more of them to produce a decisive contribution.

For Nwachukwu, the immediate task is to help Sabah improve defensively and become more effective in attack.

Slavia Prague, meanwhile, will seek to convert their attacking opportunities into points as both clubs attempt to improve their positions in the league phase.

### USOR FACES LIVERPOOL ABSENCE

On Wednesday, attention turns to Austria, where LASK face Liverpool.

Nigerian forward Moses Usor is reportedly expected to miss the match because of a shoulder injury, denying him a potential opportunity to feature against one of European football’s most recognisable clubs.

Liverpool enter the fixture looking to build on their 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in the opening round.

LASK, meanwhile, will need a strong performance to compete against the English side. Usor’s availability remains a concern, with his recovery likely to determine when he can return to action.

### ONYEDIKA AND SANUSI ADD TO THE STORY

Raphael Onyedika also features among the Nigerians to watch as Stuttgart prepare to face Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday.

The midfielder’s defensive discipline, ball-winning ability and technical quality could prove important as Stuttgart seek a positive result in the competition.

Zaidu Sanusi’s Porto are scheduled to face Real Betis in Spain. However, reports suggest that injury could prevent the Nigerian left-back from featuring.

Porto will be looking to respond after losing their opening match to Manchester City, while Real Betis began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Lille.

### NIGERIAN STARS SEEK A STRONGER RESPONSE

From Osimhen’s challenge against Barcelona to Lookman’s test against Manchester United, the Champions League’s second matchday offers Nigerian footballers several opportunities to make an impression.

Nwachukwu and the Nigerian contingent at Slavia Prague will also be under scrutiny, while Onyedika’s assignment with Stuttgart adds to the country’s representation.

Although the opening round brings disappointment for the featured players, the next fixtures provide another opportunity to contribute goals, assists, defensive strength and crucial points.

For Nigerian football fans, the hope is that the country’s representatives will rise to the challenge and deliver performances worthy of Europe’s premier club competition.
