The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has scheduled October 20 for the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council as preparations intensify for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, announces the date during a press briefing in Abuja, where he reaffirms the party’s commitment to its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Cleopas says the inauguration will take place during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC. The meeting will also consider and approve important decisions concerning the party’s preparations for the elections.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the NDC plans to use the occasion to strengthen its campaign structure and improve coordination among party leaders and members ahead of the polls.
According to Cleopas, the party will also present Certificates of Return to its candidates and organise a dinner aimed at promoting unity and cooperation within its ranks.
The national chairman rejects claims that the party is not serious about participating in the 2027 elections. He describes such suggestions as politically motivated and insists that the NDC continues to work towards its electoral objectives.
Cleopas explains that the party is taking time to select suitable members for the Presidential Campaign Council because of the importance of the election and the responsibilities involved.
He says the leadership wants to ensure that those appointed have the character and ability required to carry out their duties effectively.
The chairman also dismisses claims that the NDC has remained inactive since announcing Obi and Kwankwaso as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
He says party leaders have continued consultations and engagements with Nigerians in different parts of the country.
Cleopas identifies recent visits to Sokoto and Kaduna as part of these activities. He also announces a planned visit to Enugu on October 15, ahead of the campaign council’s inauguration.
The party leader maintains that these engagements demonstrate the NDC’s ongoing efforts to build support and prepare its structures for the forthcoming elections.
On the party’s presidential ticket, Cleopas insists that the leadership remains united behind Obi and Kwankwaso.
He says National Leader Seriake Dickson, members of the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee support the candidates and recognise their mandate to lead the party into the elections.
Cleopas describes the ticket as one that reflects Nigeria’s religious, ethnic and generational diversity, presenting it as part of the party’s vision for the country.
The chairman also warns against any attempt to manipulate the electoral process before, during or after the 2027 general elections.
He says the NDC intends to challenge any alleged electoral irregularities and compete strongly against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
However, the party’s statements and political claims remain those of its leadership as the campaign preparations continue.
With the October 20 meeting approaching, attention now turns to the composition of the Presidential Campaign Council and the decisions the party will adopt as it prepares for the 2027 polls.
