Nigerian footballer Quadri Liameed has been rushed to hospital after suffering a frightening head injury during a Spanish second-division football match.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who plays for CE Sabadell, was injured during his team’s league encounter against Albacete at the Carlos Belmonte Stadium on Saturday, October 31.
The incident occurred in the 42nd minute when Albacete forward José Corpas attempted an aerial volley but accidentally struck Liameed in the head with his boot.
The Nigerian midfielder collapsed on the pitch and briefly lost consciousness, prompting an immediate intervention by medical personnel from both clubs.
He was fitted with a neck brace, placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to a hospital for emergency medical examinations.
Following the incident, referee Andrés Fuentes Molina showed Corpas a straight red card, while the match was temporarily suspended for approximately nine minutes as medical teams attended to the injured player.
However, there was encouraging news from the Spanish club.
Sabadell subsequently confirmed that Liameed had regained consciousness and that initial medical examinations produced positive results.
On November 1, the club announced that the Nigerian had been discharged from hospital after further tests returned satisfactory results.
His father, Hajji Gafar, also confirmed that his son was in stable condition and was expected to undergo additional concussion assessment.
Despite the frightening incident, Albacete went on to defeat Sabadell 2-1.
Liameed, born in Lagos, began his football career with Nigerian club 36 Lion FC before moving to Spain, where he featured for Lleida Esportiu before joining Sabadell in July 2025.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of player safety, medical preparedness and concussion management in professional football.
For Liameed, the immediate priority is a full recovery and a safe return to competitive football.
