Benin’s newly elected president, Romuald Wadagni, is preparing for official diplomatic visits to the United Arab Emirates and Russia as his administration seeks to strengthen international partnerships and expand the country’s global engagement.
Wadagni assumed office on May 24, 2026, following his victory in Benin’s April presidential election. Since taking office, he has embarked on diplomatic engagements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation with strategic partners.
Mediaplusng.com reports that, according to La Nouvelle Tribune, the Beninese leader is expected to visit the United Arab Emirates before travelling to Russia for a summit hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The planned visits come after Wadagni’s recent diplomatic engagements with France and Rwanda, reflecting his administration’s efforts to broaden Benin’s international relationships.
On October 5, Wadagni completed his first official visit to France, where discussions focused on bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly described the relationship between France and Benin as one built on friendship, trust and ambition, while emphasising the importance of a partnership between equals.
The engagement highlighted continuing diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries as Benin seeks opportunities to advance its development priorities.
Wadagni also visited Kigali, where he was received by Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The meeting marked his first official visit to Rwanda since assuming office.
His upcoming engagement with the United Arab Emirates could provide opportunities to explore cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure and other areas of mutual interest, although specific agreements have not yet been announced.
Meanwhile, the planned visit to Russia is expected to provide another platform for diplomatic engagement, particularly as African countries continue to pursue partnerships with international powers across different regions.
For Benin, the visits represent part of a broader effort to maintain relations with established partners while exploring additional avenues for economic cooperation and international investment.
However, the outcomes of the proposed engagements will depend on the discussions held, agreements reached and the practical steps taken to translate diplomatic relations into measurable benefits for the country.
As preparations continue, attention will focus on the priorities Benin places on its relationships with the UAE and Russia, and how these engagements may shape its foreign policy and economic partnerships under President Wadagni.
