PDP Rejects Tinubu Re-Election

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected calls for support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, faulting remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urging PDP candidates to support the incumbent president.

In a statement issued on October 20, 2026, and signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party’s Interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong, the PDP reaffirmed its position that opposition parties should provide Nigerians with an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress, rather than support its continued stay in power.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the party’s response follows comments attributed to Wike, who reportedly urged PDP candidates to collapse their political structures and support Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

The PDP dismissed the appeal, arguing that it was not directed at genuine members of the party but at individuals it described as pretenders within the opposition who were allegedly working in the interest of the APC.

The party maintained that its role as an opposition platform was to challenge the ruling government through democratic engagement, present alternative policies and give Nigerians a choice in future elections.

It also opposed proposals for a broad political alliance involving opposition figures and the ruling party, warning that such an arrangement could weaken political competition and undermine the principles of electoral democracy.

According to the PDP, a functioning democracy requires opposition parties to maintain their independence, scrutinise government policies and offer competing ideas on how to address the country’s challenges.

The party’s position highlights continuing disagreements over political alliances and the direction of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While political alliances are a feature of Nigeria’s multiparty system, the PDP’s statement indicates that the party does not support an arrangement that would require it to endorse Tinubu’s re-election.

The dispute also brings renewed attention to the relationship between Wike and the PDP, particularly amid the party’s internal leadership crisis and continuing legal proceedings over its leadership structure.

The party urged its members to remain committed while awaiting a decision by the Court of Appeal on its ongoing leadership dispute.

In the statement, the PDP said the case had been heard and that it was awaiting the court’s ruling, which it believes will resolve the dispute over the party’s leadership and ownership.

The pending judgment is significant because the leadership controversy has raised questions about the party’s internal administration, unity and preparedness for future political contests.

However, the final outcome rests with the court, and the party’s expectations should not be treated as a substitute for the eventual judicial decision.

The PDP’s latest declaration therefore combines two important issues: its opposition to supporting Tinubu’s re-election and its effort to resolve an internal leadership dispute that could affect its political direction.

For the ruling APC, the debate comes amid preparations for the next electoral cycle, while opposition parties continue to consider whether to contest independently or explore political cooperation.

The disagreement also raises broader questions about the role of opposition parties in Nigeria’s democracy, the limits of political realignment and the importance of allowing voters to choose between competing political programmes.

For now, the PDP says it will not support Tinubu’s re-election, insisting that its responsibility is to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the APC-led government.

The party’s next steps may depend partly on the outcome of its leadership case and how it manages disagreements among its members in the months leading up to the 2027 elections.

As political consultations continue, attention will remain on whether the PDP can settle its internal differences and establish a clear strategy for the next general elections.

The party’s position is clear: it intends to maintain its opposition to Tinubu’s re-election while awaiting the Court of Appeal’s decision on its leadership dispute.

The unfolding developments are expected to remain central to discussions about opposition unity, political alliances and the future of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
