The United Nations has congratulated its colleague, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, on receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her longstanding commitment to human rights, international justice and the rule of law.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Pillay as this year’s laureate on October 9, recognising her efforts to promote peace and strengthen international legal principles.

Pillay, a South African jurist and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has spent decades advancing accountability for serious human rights violations and defending the rights of vulnerable populations.

Her professional journey began during South Africa’s apartheid era, when she challenged racial discrimination and defended activists fighting for equality and freedom.

In 1995, she became the first Black woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court. She later served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, contributing to the development of international criminal law.

Pillay also served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, advocating for equality, dignity and the protection of people facing persecution and discrimination.

Her work extended to international investigations and judicial proceedings involving allegations of grave crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The Nobel Committee says her contribution to strengthening international law demonstrates the importance of holding individuals and states accountable for violations, regardless of their power or political influence.

Reacting to the award, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres congratulates Pillay, describing her as a steadfast and independent voice for justice.

He also highlights the significance of her work in defending international law and protecting human rights, noting that the recognition honours the wider community of people working to advance peace, accountability and human dignity.

The award comes at a time when international legal institutions face growing pressure amid conflicts and disagreements over accountability for alleged violations.

By recognising Pillay, the Nobel Committee underscores the relationship between justice and lasting peace, emphasising that international law remains an important framework for resolving disputes and addressing serious crimes without resorting to violence.

For human rights advocates, the honour represents recognition of decades of work to ensure that victims of abuse have access to justice and that those accused of serious violations can be held accountable through established legal processes.

Pillay’s career also illustrates the role of independent judges, international courts and human rights institutions in confronting discrimination and strengthening protections for individuals and communities.

Her recognition is expected to renew attention on the importance of upholding the rule of law, supporting international justice mechanisms and protecting the fundamental rights of people around the world.

As congratulations continue to arrive from international organisations and human rights advocates, the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize highlights a message central to Pillay’s career: sustainable peace depends on justice, accountability and respect for human dignity.
