PANAMA EARTHQUAKE: 7.7-MAGNITUDE QUAKE INJURES 27, FORCES HUNDREDS TO FLEE

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A powerful earthquake strikes Panama, leaving a trail of destruction, terrifying residents and forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes and workplaces as buildings shake violently across affected communities.

The earthquake, initially estimated at magnitude 7.7, leaves at least 27 people with minor injuries and forces approximately 300 evacuations. More than 400 buildings sustain damage, including 142 homes and 188 schools. Authorities report no deaths or missing persons in the available initial assessments.

The tremor sends shockwaves through communities around Tonosí, Penonomé, Los Santos and Coclé Province, with the shaking felt as far away as Panama City. Residents rush into the streets, while people inside hospitals, schools, hotels and construction sites experience moments of intense fear as structures sway and objects fall.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the earthquake causes significant structural damage in Penonomé, including the partial collapse of a section of San Juan Bautista Cathedral, damage to the governor’s office and the partial collapse of a hotel. Reports also indicate damage to roads and other infrastructure, raising concerns about the safety of affected buildings and transport routes.

More than 40 aftershocks are reported following the initial tremor, adding to the anxiety of residents who fear returning to potentially damaged structures. Videos circulating online capture the terrifying moments, from classrooms shaken by the force of the earthquake to swimming-pool water surging violently and a live sports broadcast being interrupted.

The disaster also raises fears of possible tsunami impacts across parts of the Pacific coast, prompting concern among communities far beyond Panama. However, tsunami alerts, wave forecasts and evacuation instructions must be confirmed through official monitoring agencies, as preliminary reports can change rapidly.

For a country where earthquakes of this reported magnitude are uncommon, the scale of the shaking and the damage to homes, schools and public buildings are deeply unsettling.

Emergency responders now face the critical task of assessing damaged structures, assisting affected residents and ensuring that people remain clear of buildings that may be unsafe.

Although no deaths are reported in the initial figures, the incident is a stark reminder of how quickly a natural disaster can disrupt lives, threaten public safety and leave entire communities searching for security.

As assessments continue, Panama faces an urgent challenge: protecting its people, restoring damaged infrastructure and helping frightened families recover from the shock of a devastating earthquake.
