Otedola Bridge Tanker Fire

Two casualties have been reported after a diesel-laden tanker fell from Otedola Bridge and caught fire underneath the bridge in Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, inward Berger, triggering an emergency response from firefighters and traffic management officials.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, announced the incident in a post on X at about 5:10 p.m., confirming that emergency responders were attending to the victims while firefighting operations were underway.

The agency said arrangements were being made to transport the victims to hospital. LASTMA personnel also moved to manage traffic around the affected area and reduce the risk to motorists.

Drivers approaching the scene were advised to exercise caution, reduce speed and follow instructions from traffic officials while emergency operations continued.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service provided further details about the incident in a separate statement published on Facebook.

According to the service, the tanker had a capacity of 33,000 litres and was carrying petroleum products from a depot when it fell between the inward and outward sections of Otedola Bridge.

The fire service said it received a distress call at approximately 4:09 p.m. on Monday.

Firefighters from its Alausa and Ikeja stations were subsequently deployed to the scene, arriving at about 4:16 p.m. to begin tackling the blaze.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with tanker accidents on busy roads, particularly when vehicles carrying combustible products are involved.

Diesel, like other petroleum products, can create serious fire hazards when released during an accident, especially if the circumstances allow the fuel to ignite and the fire to spread.

Such incidents can also expose nearby motorists, road users, residents and emergency personnel to danger, while causing significant traffic disruption.

In this case, the tanker reportedly fell beneath the bridge, an area where emergency crews had to contain the fire and manage the surrounding scene.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that the fire had been extinguished. However, firefighters remained at the location to address residual hotspots and reduce the possibility of the blaze reigniting.

The continued presence of emergency personnel was important to ensure that remaining heat sources were dealt with before the scene could be considered safe.

Meanwhile, LASTMA’s traffic management operation was aimed at helping motorists navigate the area safely as responders carried out their duties.

The incident also renews attention on the risks associated with heavy-duty vehicles transporting petroleum products through densely populated urban areas and along major transport corridors.

Tanker accidents can have serious consequences, depending on the quantity of fuel involved, the location of the crash and the speed at which emergency services can respond.

Although the fire has been brought under control, further details about the circumstances that caused the tanker to fall were not provided in the statements cited.

The identities and conditions of the two casualties were also not disclosed in the available information.

Authorities have urged motorists in the affected area to remain cautious and cooperate with traffic officials during emergency operations.

For now, the immediate priority is ensuring the safety of the victims, preventing any further fire outbreak and maintaining order around the scene.

The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of road safety, proper vehicle maintenance and effective emergency response, particularly where tankers carrying petroleum products are concerned.
