Nigeria’s Flamingos are through to the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after producing a sensational 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
It is a historic achievement for Nigerian women’s football as the Flamingos reach the final of the competition for the first time in the country’s history.
After a goalless first half, the Nigerian girls returned with renewed determination, attacking purpose and an impressive display of teamwork that overwhelmed their Brazilian opponents.
Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, giving Nigeria the breakthrough they desperately needed.
The Flamingos continued to push forward, and their persistence paid off again in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a superb finish.
Bashiru was not done yet. She struck again in the 80th minute to complete her brace and put Nigeria firmly in control with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Brazil managed to pull one goal back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but it was too late to change the outcome.
At the final whistle, Nigeria celebrated a memorable 3-1 victory and a place in the championship match.
But the road to the trophy will not be easy.
Standing between Nigeria and the ultimate prize is Japan, who secured their place in the final after eliminating defending champions North Korea in a dramatic semi-final.
The encounter ended 1-1 after regulation time, with Japan scoring a late equaliser before winning 4-1 on penalties.
Japan’s victory ended North Korea’s hopes of defending their title and set up an exciting showdown with Nigeria.
The final now presents an opportunity for the Flamingos to make even greater history by becoming the first Nigerian team to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
From the group stages to the knockout rounds, these young Nigerian footballers have demonstrated courage, determination, discipline and the never-say-die spirit associated with Nigerian football.
They have carried the nation’s hopes with pride and shown that the future of Nigerian women’s football is bright.
Congratulations to the Flamingos, their coaches and the entire support team.
One more victory!
Bring the trophy home, girls!
