The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and suspected thugs against the destruction, defacement or unlawful removal of campaign posters, banners and billboards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Force says it has observed growing incidents of political campaign materials belonging to candidates and political parties being deliberately destroyed across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the police condemned the development, describing it as an act of political intolerance and warning those involved to stop immediately.
According to the police, destroying or defacing another candidate’s campaign materials may constitute malicious damage, which is a criminal offence under applicable laws.
The Force cited Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, stressing that political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another person’s property.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consequently directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents.
They have also been instructed to investigate reported cases and ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or finance the destruction of campaign materials will also face prosecution where evidence establishes their involvement.
The Force emphasised that all political parties and candidates, regardless of their political affiliation or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.
It called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peaceful campaigns, respect opposing political views and allow every candidate to exercise their democratic rights.
The police warned that political thuggery, intimidation and destruction of campaign materials would not be tolerated as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
BE WARNED. RESPECT THE LAW. LET DEMOCRACY THRIVE.
